Making a Run for the Crown by David Sherfield

world series    The sport love of my life is just about ready to begin the 2013 season, which is baseball.  The Detroit Tigers are poised to head back to the World Series, and I am going to be there with them every step of the way, thanks to TV.

Spring training is over, and ball players have been getting ready for a run for the greatest reward Baseball has to offer: the World Series Trophy.  What a thrill it must be to be so intend on winning such a prize and to be able to say I was on a World Series Championship team.  I have wondered how that would feel to be on journey with people that are a close nit team working together to achieve the highest prize ever in the world of baseball.

A run for the World Series Trophy of Baseball reminds me of another prize that I want more than anything else: the Crown of Life.  To receive the Crown of Life, I don’t have to be a home run hitter, a great pitcher, or have great defense stopping a baseball, but there are some areas of life I need be on top of my game.                                                                         crown of life

  • James 1:2   “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

The three areas that I must be aware of from the verse above are steadfast, stand the test, and love him.  The overwhelming thoughts that cannot be overemphasized are I must stay in the game, stay on the team, stay in love with Jesus.  You and I  must keep our eyes on the ball, which is the prize, the crown of life.

The Apostle Paul was looking forward to being awarded the crown that was promised.  He called it the Crown of Righteous in  2 Tim. 4:8.

  • 2 Timothy 4:8    “Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing”

In order for me and you to receive the Crown of Righteous, the Crown of Life, another crown had to be worn first: a crown of thorns.   Jesus wore is willingly because he loves us.

                                   it-takes-a-crown-of-thornsJohn 19:2–5

2 “And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head and arrayed him in a purple robe. 3 They came up to him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and struck him with their hands.”

The pain from the thorns being driven into his scalp, mocking and jeering, and hitting him all had to be done on his way to the Cross where the final act of sacrifice took place.  Jesus, the son of God, worn a crown of thorns so I could have the opportunity to be given a crown of life, a crown of righteousness.

I sincerely hope you are looking forward to wearing a Crown that is worth more than any earthy crown that was ever made and worn.  The Paul and James were both looking forward to being awarded the crown that was promised.   The verses below tells the story in a few words how these two men were on top of their game making a run for the crown that lasts forever.

Paul said in 2 Timothy 4:7-9

7 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

Paul fought, finished the race, and kept the faith.

James 1:2   “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”

James remained steadfast, stood the test, loved HIM.

How am I going to make a run for the crown and not fade away, not fizzle out,  and without stopping short of having a crown of life given to me and you?   The only way is to stay on the team, stay in the game of life, and stay in love with Christ.

While I never have been on a championship team in the world of baseball, or any other championship team, I am on journey with a close nit group of people working together to help one another achieve the highest prize ever: a crown of life.

This close nit group of people is called the “the Church”.  The word church does not mean a building, but means people that have been called for a holy purpose.  The word  “church”  in the Bible means “the called out ones”.

1Pe 2:9  “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light”.

Are you part of the “called out ones” the Church?  Are you on a journey heading toward the the Crown of Life, which is heaven or has your life taken a detour?   Detours in life causes people to become lost, but there is way back.

In Revelation 2:10, Jesus said, “…Be faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life.”

Perhaps you haven’t started the journey yet, and you want the Lord to give you a crown of life when you leave this earth.  Are you on Christ’s team?
